Smells Like Money is an oral history documentary that I produced, shot and edited about the controversial pulp mill on Bellingham's waterfront.  It won a Silver Telly Award, and an Award of Excellence from the Videographer Awards. It is currently for sale at Village Books in Bellingham.

Bellingham's Big Box Ban

This is a video I shot and edited about Bellingham's decision to ban big box stores.  I was working as videographer for BTV10, live switching City Council meetings at the time, so I had a front row seat for this debate and decided it would make a good video.

Press

Both Slog and the Seattle PI's Big Blog wrote about my "innovative" Mike McGinn press conference coverage.

O'Reilly Radar featured Hope Art on it's blog.

The Seattle Times used my video to analyse "the shot" at the end of a Storm playoff game.

The Western Front wrote an article on me after Smells Like Money won a Videographer Award.

Seattle Sketcher

Shot and edited this video about Gabriel Campanario, AKA Seattle Sketcher for CHS.

Got a great response from the video, but the best part of the whole thing, for me anyways... was that I'm in Gabriel's sketch

I Love My Bike Book video for CHS

Saw Justin (CHS Publisher) post a tweet about this I Love My Bike photo session at around 2pm on Friday.  I was down there shooting by 3, back home editing by 5, and had the video published by later that evening. One thing I'm trying to get better at is being able to throw videos like this together quickly, which is necessary for journalism, and also to lower the cost for the many small businesses that are starting to produce video.

It's definitely a bit harder with my EX1 to just run out and start shooting than it was with my Panasonic DVX.  Focus and exposure both take a bit longer to get just right than with the DVX.  But I've found that with HD, color correcting seems to be much more forgiving.  In a couple of shots here I thought the sky was totally blown out, but after color correction I was able to bring back some of the detail and even a bit of color.  With the DVX footage, if it looked blown out it was blown out, there was usually no salvaging it.

I also now know to be more careful about the shotgun mic dipping into the shot when using the wide angle lens. duh.

Zebigo Video

I just produced a video for a new ride sharing service Zebigo.

The idea seems pretty solid if they can get enough users, and as more people are choosing to live car-free I'm sure the ideal will catch on.  But one thing they're already doing right... they're using VIDEO.  Obviously I'm a little (or maybe a lot) biased here, but for me there is no better way of introducing a business or concept to consumers than a video.  We've entered the age where Every Company is a Media Company and there's no turning back. If you're goal is to make a connection with your audience, video is clearly the way to go.

Me shooting B-Roll on the Jose Rizal Bridge (note the broken tripod! it broke during a Storm game this past season, I'm waiting for a part to get delivered so I can get it fixed)

First Footage with the EX1

Took me a while but I've finally got some footage up from my new Sony EX1.  The first was from the very first night I had the camera, just me harassing my girlfriend while she made some vegi soup.  (Make sure to watch it full screen if your computer can handle it!)

This one is a video I shot on Friday up in Bellingham for artist Ben Mann.  All the stuff with the clients picking up the chandelier was with a wide angle adapter. (this one was compressed down to standard def before uploading)

So far I'm loving the EX1.  Picture looks great and the camera itself has been pretty straightforward to learn so far.  It's definitely heavier than my old Panasonic DVX, I was feeling it in my arms by the end of the Ben Mann shoot.  The best part is not having to deal with tapes, I just slide the Memory Stick directly into my laptop and capture via Final Cut Pro.  So much simpler and faster.

More to come, I still haven't done much to test the variable frame rates and record modes so that'll be next.

New Camera!

Even though I slept through the delivery this morning, my brand new Sony EX1 is finally safe and sound in my apartment.  Here it is...

expect some test footage soon!
